The Detroit story
Pam Dawber was born in Detroit in 1951, the elder of two daughters, and grew up in Michigan, attending Reid Elementary School in Goodrich and then North Farmington High School in Farmington Hills. After high school she enrolled at Oakland Community College, planning to transfer to a four-year university, but instead moved to New York City, where she became a fashion model with the Wilhelmina agency and then turned to acting in commercials and theater. In 1978 she was cast as Mindy McConnell, the level-headed Boulder woman who takes in an alien played by Robin Williams, himself raised in the Detroit suburbs, in Mork & Mindy (1978–1982). She later starred in My Sister Sam (1986–1988). After years largely away from the screen, she returned in 2021 for a seven-episode arc on NCIS alongside her husband, Mark Harmon.
