The Detroit story
Thorpe, already an NBA All-Star and a 1994 champion with the Houston Rockets, joined the Pistons after a brief stop in Portland, traded to Detroit for Randolph Childress and Bill Curley. He became the Pistons' starting power forward for two seasons at the Palace of Auburn Hills, bringing rebounding strength and veteran scoring to a team in transition after the Bad Boys era. Before the 1997–98 season Detroit dealt him to the Vancouver Grizzlies for a conditional first-round pick, a selection that eventually became the second overall pick in the 2003 draft. His Detroit years were a steady, productive middle chapter in an eighteen-season NBA career.
