The Detroit story
Alexander Omar Smith, known as Omar-S, is a Detroit producer whose raw, machine-made house and techno has built one of the most distinctive catalogs of the city's post-2000 generation. He founded FXHE Records in 2003 and has released nearly all of his music on it, keeping full control of pressing and distribution in the independent tradition of Underground Resistance and Submerge. Records such as the Motown Methods EP (2014) nod to his hometown's musical past. In the 2010s he championed younger Detroit artists, including John FM and HiTech, releasing their music and giving them space to throw events. In November 2023 a physical altercation with Detroit artist SupercoolWicked at the Paramita Sound club, over a royalties dispute, led to a police investigation, with each side accusing the other; several artists distanced themselves from his label. In January 2024 he opened for Madonna at Little Caesars Arena.
