The Detroit story
Obie Trice was born and raised on Detroit's west side by his mother, along with three brothers. By 14 he was going to rap battles around the city, including the Saturday open mics at the Hip Hop Shop on West Seven Mile Road, the proving ground for Proof, Eminem and much of Detroit's hip-hop generation. In 2000 he signed with Eminem's Shady Records, and his albums Cheers (2003) and Second Round's on Me (2006) both reached the Billboard top ten, with "Got Some Teeth" becoming his signature single. On New Year's Eve 2005 he was shot in the head while driving on the Lodge Freeway near Wyoming Avenue, and survived. After his friend and labelmate Proof was killed in a Detroit nightclub in 2006, Trice left Shady and founded his own label, Black Market Entertainment. He has also faced legal trouble in Oakland County, including a 90-day jail sentence in 2020.
