The Detroit story
Nate Young began Wolf Eyes in 1996 as a one-man project in the Ann Arbor and Detroit underground, releasing cassettes and CD-Rs through his own label, Hanson Records. Aaron Dilloway joined in 1998 and John Olson, of the tape label American Tapes, in 2000, and the trio's harsh, homemade electronics and screamed vocals made them the flagship of a thriving Michigan noise scene that also shaped Andrew W.K. Wolf Eyes signed with Sub Pop for Burned Mind (2004), an unusual step for a noise act, and has released close to 300 recordings on labels including Third Man Records. The group has collaborated with Anthony Braxton, Sonic Youth and Merzbow. Now a duo of Young and Olson, they describe their music as “psycho jazz.”
