The Detroit story
Lieberman was already one of the most decorated figures in women's basketball history, a two-time Olympic medalist and Naismith Hall of Famer, when she was hired in 1998 as the first general manager and head coach of the newly formed Detroit Shock in the WNBA. A decade later, at age 50, she signed a seven-day contract to play for the franchise she had once run, breaking her own record as the oldest player in WNBA history. She played nine minutes and recorded two assists in her return, a symbolic final chapter to her long connection with Detroit's franchise, which went on to win the WNBA title that season.
