The Detroit story
Ramsey had already built a 14-season career with the Buffalo Sabres, plus a stint in Pittsburgh, when he signed with Detroit as a free agent, reuniting with head coach Scotty Bowman. In 1995 he reached his only Stanley Cup Final as a Red Wing, though Detroit was swept by his former Olympic teammate Neal Broten and the New Jersey Devils. The following season the powerful Red Wings set a league record with 62 wins and advanced deep into the playoffs before losing to Colorado. Ramsey's NHL career, one built on steady, physical defensive play going back to his gold medal with the 1980 U.S. Olympic team, wound down in Detroit before he moved into coaching.
