The Detroit story
Posner was born in Detroit and grew up in the northern suburb of Southfield. He attended Bingham Farms Elementary and Berkshire Middle School and graduated from Wylie E. Groves High School in Beverly Hills, Michigan, where he began making music; he later returned to the school to shoot a music video. While studying sociology at Duke University he released mixtapes that led to a deal with J Records, and his 2010 single "Cooler Than Me" reached No. 6 on the Hot 100. He went on to co-write songs for Justin Bieber, Maroon 5 and fellow Detroiter Big Sean, and the 2015 remix of "I Took a Pill in Ibiza" became a worldwide hit. In 2019 he walked across the United States, and he used a later climb of Mount Everest to raise $250,000 for the Detroit Justice Center.
