The Detroit story
Green had already built his reputation as "Game Over Green" for his knack of scoring winning goals during a decade with the Washington Capitals when the Red Wings signed him to a three-year, $18 million contract on July 1, 2015. Detroit re-signed him to a further two-year deal in 2018, and he remained on the roster through the 2019–20 season, his production tapering off as the team entered a rebuild; that year he recorded three goals and eight assists in 48 games. Though he never recaptured his Washington-era offensive peak in Detroit, his five seasons made him a steady veteran presence on the Red Wings' blue line during a difficult period for the franchise.
