The Detroit story
Redmond won two Stanley Cups as a young player in Montreal before the Canadiens traded him to Detroit in 1971 in the deal for Frank Mahovlich. At the Olympia he blossomed into one of the NHL's best goal scorers, becoming the first Red Wing to reach 50 goals in a season with 52 in 1972–1973, and following it with 51 the next year while playing on a line with Marcel Dionne. Back problems forced him to retire in 1976 at only 28. He stayed in Detroit and moved into broadcasting, and for decades he has been the color commentator on Red Wings television, from the Joe Louis Arena years through the move to Little Caesars Arena, loved by viewers for his folksy exclamations and blunt analysis. Health problems later limited his road travel. He received the Hockey Hall of Fame's Foster Hewitt Award in 2011 and entered the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
