The Detroit story
Mick Collins was born in Detroit in 1965 and grew up surrounded by the city's Motown soul. In 1986, at 20, he helped form the Gories, a raw, bass-less garage-punk trio that became a cult influence on the next generation of Detroit bands, including the White Stripes. He went on to lead the Dirtbombs, a wide-ranging group known for its unusual lineups, and played in the Screws and other projects, becoming one of the elder statesmen of the city's garage-rock underground. His knowledge of Detroit's musical past also found a home on the radio: from June 2006 he hosted Night Train, a Saturday-night show on WDET, Detroit's public radio station, whose first episode moved from Junior Walker & the All Stars to the local garage band the Hysteric Narcotics. Through his bands and broadcasts he has linked Detroit's soul heritage with its punk and garage revival.
