The Detroit story
Detroit acquired Scherzer in a three-team trade in December 2009 that sent Curtis Granderson to the Yankees, and over the following five seasons he grew from a hard-throwing pitcher with control problems into one of the American League's most dominant starters, pairing with fellow ace Justin Verlander to front the Tigers' rotation. He helped Detroit win four consecutive AL Central titles and reach the 2012 World Series, where the Tigers were swept by San Francisco. His best individual season came in 2013, when he opened 12–0, the best start in franchise history, finished 21–3 and won the American League Cy Young Award. Scherzer left Detroit as a free agent after 2014, signing with Washington, and went on to two more Cy Young Awards and two World Series titles elsewhere, cementing a reputation as one of his generation's greatest pitchers that began to take shape on the Comerica Park mound.
