The Detroit story
Max Gail was born in Detroit in 1943, the son of Mary Elizabeth and Maxwell Trowbridge Gail, a businessman, and grew up on Grosse Ile, the island community in the Detroit River south of the city, where he went to Grosse Ile High School. He earned a bachelor's degree at Williams College in Massachusetts and then an MBA at the University of Michigan, an unusual path for an actor. His stage debut came in 1970 in San Francisco, where he played Chief Bromden in the original stage production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Television fame followed as Detective Stan "Wojo" Wojciehowicz, the big-hearted, impulsive ex-Marine of the Greenwich Village squad room in Barney Miller (1975–1982), a role that brought him two Emmy nominations. Decades later he found a new audience on General Hospital as Mike Corbin, winning Daytime Emmys in 2019 and 2021.
