The Detroit story
Mary Scheer was born in Detroit on March 19, 1963. Little has been published about her Michigan childhood, so her link to the city is her birthplace. She trained in sketch comedy with the Groundlings in Los Angeles, and that background won her a spot in the original cast of Fox's sketch show MADtv when it premiered in 1995; over three seasons she created a gallery of characters and celebrity impressions before leaving in 1998. She then built a long career in children's and family television, playing Marissa Benson, the hovering mother of Freddie on Nickelodeon's iCarly, and later Gladys on Disney Channel's Bunk'd. She is also a busy voice actress, heard as Alice the zookeeper on The Penguins of Madagascar and as every female voice on the game-show parody MXC, and in GEICO commercials.
