The Detroit story
Marlon Jackson, the sixth of the Jackson children, joined his brothers' group in Gary, Indiana, as a small boy and became known for his dancing. After a handful of records on the local Steeltown label, the Jackson 5 were brought to Detroit by Motown singer Bobby Taylor in July 1968 and auditioned at Hitsville U.S.A., the house-turned-studio on West Grand Boulevard where Motown was born. Berry Gordy signed them, and in early 1969 they worked in Hitsville's Studio A before Motown moved the family to California. Marlon sang and danced through the group's run of Motown hits, stayed on when they left the label for Epic in 1975 as the Jacksons, and appeared with his brothers on the Motown 25 television special in 1983. He later ran the Study Peace Foundation to promote peace and unity.
