The Detroit story
Detroit had been chasing a veteran right-handed defenseman when a deal for Toronto's Dion Phaneuf fell through, so the Red Wings turned to New Jersey and acquired Židlický instead on March 2, 2015, giving up a conditional draft pick. He filled the team's need for a power-play presence almost immediately: in his debut on March 4, he scored the game-winning goal in overtime against the New York Rangers. His stint in Detroit lasted only the rest of that season, but the memorable debut goal made it more than just a rental.
