The Detroit story
After 14 seasons built mostly with the Los Angeles Kings, Luc Robitaille signed with the Red Wings for the 2001–02 season, taking less money than other offers because Detroit, freshly bolstered by goaltender Dominik Hašek, gave him his best chance at a championship. He scored 30 goals and 50 points as the Red Wings won the Presidents' Trophy, then helped Detroit beat the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2002 Stanley Cup Final. At the direction of captain Steve Yzerman, every Red Wing who had never won the Cup got to hoist it before the rest of the team, and Robitaille became the third player to skate it around Joe Louis Arena, after Yzerman and Hašek. He played one more season in Detroit before returning to the Kings, retiring in 2006 as the highest-scoring left winger in NHL history.
