The Detroit story
Creekmur, a World War II veteran from New Jersey who played at William & Mary, joined the Lions before the 1950 season and never played for another team. Big, durable and versatile, he lined up at tackle and guard on offense and sometimes on the defensive line, and he opened holes for the backfield stars Bobby Layne and Doak Walker. He was a key member of the teams that won NFL championships in 1952, 1953 and 1957, the most successful decade in franchise history, and he was selected to eight Pro Bowls. Unusually for a lineman, he was known for going more than a decade without missing a game. His quiet work in the trenches at Briggs Stadium was long overlooked, and he waited until 1996, his 32nd year of eligibility and then a record, to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
