The Detroit story
Laura Innes was born in Pontiac in 1957 and grew up in neighboring Birmingham, one of Detroit's older northern suburbs. She graduated from Birmingham Seaholm High School and went on to study theater at Northwestern University near Chicago, where she spent her early career on the city's stages. Her breakthrough came in 1995 when she joined the NBC medical drama ER as Dr. Kerry Weaver, the brusque, crutch-using chief resident who later became chief of emergency medicine; she stayed with the show until 2009 and earned two Emmy nominations. During those years she also moved behind the camera, directing episodes of ER and The West Wing, the latter bringing her a third Emmy nomination. She later appeared in The Event and How to Get Away with Murder and has directed many network dramas. Her Detroit story is that of a suburban Oakland County girlhood before Chicago theater.
