The Detroit story
Mack was born in Royal Oak and lists West Bloomfield, one of Detroit's northwestern suburbs, as his hometown. He attended Brother Rice High School in nearby Birmingham but missed enough school while traveling for competitions that he transferred to Pontiac High School and finished his diploma through online classes, a path unusual for the region's most decorated snowboarder. He broke through by winning the 2016 US Open Slopestyle title and reached the top of the sport at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, taking silver in the Big Air final, a rare Winter Olympic medal for an athlete raised in flat, suburban Michigan rather than the mountains.
