The Detroit story
Born Agatha Weston in Detroit, she signed with Motown in 1961. Her first chart record, "Love Me All the Way", began life as the B-side of "It Should Have Been Me" until a DJ flipped it. Her biggest solo hits were Holland–Dozier–Holland's "Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)" (R&B No. 4), later covered by the Isley Brothers and the Doobie Brothers, and "Helpless". In 1966 she and Marvin Gaye recorded "It Takes Two", written by Mickey Stevenson and Sylvia Moy, which reached the Top 20. Weston left Motown in 1967, later suing over royalties, and moved to Los Angeles with her then-husband Stevenson, recording for MGM; her version of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" appeared in the film Wattstax, with proceeds donated to the United Negro College Fund. She returned to Detroit in later decades and recorded for Motorcity Records around 1990.
