The Detroit story

Kevin Hatcher was born in Detroit and grew up in Sterling Heights, the older brother of future Stanley Cup captain Derian Hatcher. He came through the city's powerful youth programs, playing for the Little Caesars 15-and-under AAA team and the Detroit Compuware Ambassadors while attending Stevenson High School. Believing it was the fastest route to the NHL, he chose major junior hockey in Canada rather than staying in Detroit, and the Washington Capitals drafted him in the first round in 1984. A big, mobile defenseman with a hard shot, he became one of the league's highest-scoring blueliners, scoring 34 goals in 1992–1993, and he played in five All-Star Games over a 17-season career with Washington, Dallas, Pittsburgh, the New York Rangers and Carolina. In 2010 he and Derian were inducted together into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
