The Detroit story
Detroit drafted Caldwell-Pope eighth overall in 2013 out of Georgia, and head coach Stan Van Gundy quickly made him the starting shooting guard and top perimeter defender. He led the Pistons in minutes during the 2015–16 season and helped the team make the playoffs for the first time since 2009. His signature Detroit moment came on January 8, 2017, when he hit a game-winning three-pointer in double overtime against Portland. After four seasons at the Palace of Auburn Hills, the Pistons let him leave as a free agent in 2017; he went on to win NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 and the Denver Nuggets in 2023.
