The Detroit story
Upton signed a six-year, $132.75 million deal with the Tigers in January 2016, joining a lineup still built around Miguel Cabrera in what the club hoped was a final playoff push for that era's roster. He delivered consistent power from the outfield, including his 200th career home run in July 2016, a solo shot that stood as the only run in a 1–0 Detroit win. As the Tigers shifted toward a rebuild the following year, they traded Upton to the Los Angeles Angels in August 2017, ending his Detroit tenure after a season and a half. He went on to make an All-Star team with the Angels and continued his career with several more clubs before retiring.
