The Detroit story
Rolshoven was born in Detroit in 1858, the son of a German immigrant jeweler, and grew up in the city before heading to Europe to study art. He trained in Düsseldorf and Munich, where he joined the circle of students around the American painter Frank Duveneck known as the Duveneck Boys, and followed him to Italy. He then became a sought-after teacher with classes in Paris and London, and settled in Florence, where he restored a medieval castle as his home and studio. The First World War brought him back to the United States, and in the American Southwest he found a new subject in Native American life and landscapes, joining the Taos Society of Artists. From 1920 until his death he divided his time among his three homes in Florence, Detroit and Santa Fe. He died in New York in 1930.
