The Detroit story
Joyce Vincent Wilson began her career in Detroit, singing background on Motown and Golden World recordings. There she met Telma Hopkins, and the two became regular backing singers at Holland–Dozier–Holland's Invictus and Hot Wax labels. After Tony Orlando's singles "Candida" and "Knock Three Times", recorded with New York session singers under the name Dawn, became hits, he needed a group to tour and record with, and Wilson and Hopkins became Dawn. With Orlando they sang "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" and "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)" and hosted their own television series. In 1977 she was considered as a member of a new Supremes lineup before Motown retired the name. She has continued singing backup, often with her sister Pamela, and was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame with Tony Orlando and Dawn in 2007.
