Gatt was born in Plymouth, Michigan, and played four years of varsity soccer at Detroit Catholic Central High School before joining the Michigan Wolves youth academy, where a tournament against European club academies first drew scouting attention. He built his professional career almost entirely abroad, with clubs in Norway, Austria and Switzerland. Later in his career, while acting as caregiver for his wife during her cancer treatment, he returned home and played a single game for Detroit City FC, the semi-professional club beloved by the city's soccer fans, a brief but symbolic homecoming for a player whose career had taken him around the world.
