John Marshall Jones comes from Detroit. According to Wikidata he attended the Roeper School, the independent school for gifted students in Oakland County, before earning a BA in theater arts at Northwestern University outside Chicago. After graduation he stayed in Chicago and began his career with The Second City, the improv theater that also shaped Detroit's Tim Meadows and Keegan-Michael Key. Early film roles included parts in Good Morning, Vietnam and White Men Can't Jump. His best-known role is Floyd Henderson, the widowed father raising three children, including a teenage genius, on the sitcom Smart Guy (1997–1999), which began on The WB. He has continued to work in television dramas and on stage.
