01 / The Detroit story
The Detroit story
James Edgar was born in Detroit and grew up in nearby Roseville. He learned strings, saxophone and drums as a child and picked up songwriting and piano from musicians he met at Baptist churches in Detroit. By ten he was experimenting with electronic music, making tape loops and noise pieces, and by fifteen he was performing at Detroit raves. He released early work under names such as Michaux and Kristuit Salu before signing with the British label Warp at 18. After the EPs Access Rhythm and Bounce Make Model (2004), his debut album Color Strip (2006) blended techno, electro, R&B, glitch and hip-hop; he said its goal was to capture the essence of Detroit. XXX (2010) and Majenta (2012) followed, along with a BBC Essential Mix themed on Detroit radio of 1993. With his partner, the artist Pilar Zeta, he founded the label and design studio Ultramajic, and he has played Detroit's Movement festival twice.
