The Detroit story
Jerry Bruckheimer was born in Detroit to German Jewish immigrant parents. A film fan who loved taking snapshots, he graduated from Mumford High School on the city's northwest side in 1961, at seventeen, and earned a psychology degree at the University of Arizona. He then went to work as a producer of commercials at Detroit advertising agencies, making, among others, a one-minute spot for the new Pontiac GTO, before moving on to New York and then to feature films in the 1970s. With Don Simpson he produced Beverly Hills Cop (1984), the story of a Detroit cop whose Mumford High gym shirt became famous as a tribute to Bruckheimer's alma mater. He went on to produce Top Gun, Armageddon, the Pirates of the Caribbean series and, on television, the CSI franchise, and he returned to Detroit's Axel Foley with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024).
