The Detroit story
Detroit drafted Maxiell 26th overall out of Cincinnati in 2005, and he became a rotation big man known for shot-blocking and highlight dunks through the Pistons' late-2000s playoff runs. In 2008 he signed a four-year, $20 million extension, and in 2012 he exercised a player option to stay for an eighth season. After his playing career took him briefly to China and Turkey, the Pistons signed him to a ceremonial one-day contract in 2017 so he could retire as a member of the only NBA team he ever played for. He later returned to coaching as an assistant with the Stockton Kings, Sacramento's G League affiliate.
