The Detroit story
The Lions drafted Hanson out of Washington State in the second round in 1992, and he kicked for Detroit for the next 21 seasons, first in the Pontiac Silverdome and from 2002 at Ford Field. Through playoff runs in the 1990s, the lean years of the 2000s, including the 0–16 season of 2008, and the revival under Matthew Stafford, he was a constant. He became the franchise's all-time leading scorer and was known for long field goals, twice making the Pro Bowl. In 2011 he passed Bruce Matthews' record for games played with one team, and he finished with 327 games for Detroit, still the NFL record. Popular with fans and reporters alike, he won the local media's "Good Guy" award in 2002. He retired in 2013 and was inducted into the Pride of the Lions, the club's ring of honor, at Ford Field that fall.
