The Detroit story
Jacqueline Kim was born to Korean parents and grew up in Bloomfield Hills, in Oakland County north of Detroit. She began performing at the age of four at a small neighborhood theater she remembers as 'Willow Way', and she graduated from Bloomfield Hills Lahser High School in 1988. She earned a BFA at DePaul University's Theatre School in Chicago and worked on stage, including at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, before moving into film in the mid-1990s. She played Ensign Demora Sulu in Star Trek Generations (1994), appeared in Volcano and Brokedown Palace, and earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Eric Byler's Charlotte Sometimes (2002). Television viewers know her as the mentor Lao Ma in Xena: Warrior Princess. In 2015 she co-wrote, produced, scored and starred in the science-fiction drama Advantageous.
