The Detroit story
Jacky Clark Chisholm was born in Detroit, the daughter of Mattie Moss Clark and her first husband, Leo Cullum, and grew up with her four younger half-sisters singing in their stepfather Elbert Clark's Church of God in Christ choir. By the late 1960s the sisters were performing together in church services, and in 1973 their mother formed them into the Clark Sisters. As the group's eldest member she sang on its Detroit-made records for Sound of Gospel, including the crossover hit "You Brought the Sunshine", and on later albums such as Heart & Soul and Conqueror; the group has won several Grammy Awards and in 2024 received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Also a licensed practical nurse, she released her solo album Expectancy in 2005, recorded live at the Cathedral Center in Detroit.
