The Detroit story
George P. Codd was born in Detroit in 1869; his father served as the city's postmaster, Wayne County sheriff and a council member. At the University of Michigan he pitched for the baseball team and was its captain for a record four straight seasons, graduating in 1891. Admitted to the bar in 1892, he practiced in Detroit, was assistant city attorney from 1894 to 1897 and became a partner of Carlos E. Warner, whose daughter he married. A Republican, he served as alderman from 1902 to 1904 and was elected mayor for 1905–1906, but his support for a compromise on streetcar fares with the Detroit United Railway turned voters against him, and he lost re-election. He later served as a University of Michigan regent, as Wayne County circuit judge from 1911 to 1921, and as U.S. representative in 1921–1923. Returning to the circuit bench in 1924, he served until his death in 1927 and is buried at Elmwood.
