Gail O'Grady was born in Detroit, the daughter of Jim and Jan O'Grady. Her career was built largely in television. Her best-known role was Donna Abandando, the stylish, sharp police-precinct receptionist in the first seasons of ABC's NYPD Blue, which earned her three Primetime Emmy nominations. She later played Helen Pryor, the mother at the center of NBC's family drama American Dreams, set in 1960s Philadelphia around the music show American Bandstand, and she led a long list of television movies.
