The Detroit story
After serving with the Marines in Vietnam, Cameron joined the Spinners, then still a Motown act, as a lead singer alongside Bobby Smith. He sang both lead parts on the group's breakthrough, "It's a Shame" (1970), co-written and produced by Stevie Wonder. When the Spinners left for Atlantic in 1972, Cameron remained with Motown as a solo artist, becoming known for his ability to sound like Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield or the Isley Brothers on different records; his biggest solo hit was "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" (1975), the theme of the film Cooley High. He later married Gwen Gordy Fuqua, who managed his career for a time. He rejoined the Spinners in 2000, then sang with the Temptations from 2003 to 2007.
