The Detroit story
Detroit drafted Hronek in the third round in 2016 and signed him the same year, bringing him up through its AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, before his NHL debut in October 2018. In his first full season, 2018–19, he recorded 23 points, the most of any Red Wings rookie that year and fourth among all rookie defensemen in the league, earning him the Detroit Sports Media Rookie of the Year award. He signed a new three-year contract with Detroit in 2021 and continued as one of the team's steadier young defensemen through a rebuilding period, appearing in 60 games during the 2022–23 season before the Red Wings traded him to the Vancouver Canucks that March.
