The Detroit story
Armstrong, known as "Betsey", grew up in Ann Arbor, in the wider southeastern Michigan region, attending Huron High School before staying home for college at the University of Michigan, where she was the women's water polo team's goalkeeper and still holds the school's all-time save record with 350. She went on to a long international career with the U.S. women's national water polo team, winning silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she was the tournament's top goalkeeper, and gold at the 2012 London Olympics. She later returned to Michigan as an assistant coach for the university's women's water polo program and was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame in 2019.
