The Detroit story
Edward Joseph Weisenburger was born in Alton, Illinois, in 1960 and ordained in 1987 for the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, where he later served as rector of its cathedral. He became bishop of Salina, Kansas, in 2012 and bishop of Tucson, Arizona, in 2017, where he was known for his outspoken support of migrants along the border. On February 11, 2025, Pope Francis named him archbishop of Detroit, succeeding Allen Vigneron, and on March 18, 2025, he was installed at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, where Vigneron handed him the shepherd's staff. In his first months he made the formation of priests at Sacred Heart Major Seminary a priority and joined public witness for immigrants: on July 14, 2025, he offered a prayer before a procession organized by Catholics from Corktown's Most Holy Trinity Church to the federal immigration field office in Detroit. He leads one of the largest Catholic communities in the Midwest at a time of parish consolidation and a shrinking number of priests.
