The Detroit story
Don Harvey was born in St. Clair Shores in 1960, the sixth of eight children, and grew up in the lakeside suburb. He started acting at Lake Shore High School, went on to the University of Michigan, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1982, and then earned an MFA in acting at the Yale School of Drama in 1985. From New York he moved into films in the late 1980s and has since appeared in more than seventy features, often as tough guys and men in uniform. One of his first roles was a corrupt cop in Brian De Palma's The Untouchables; a year later he played the Black Sox conspirator Swede Risberg in John Sayles' Eight Men Out (1988). Secondary roles followed in Casualties of War, Die Hard 2 and Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line, along with many television parts. His Detroit-area story is his upbringing on Lake St. Clair and his first stage experience there.
