The Detroit story
Already the NHL's dominant goaltender in Buffalo, Hašek was traded to Detroit in June 2001 so the Red Wings could add the last piece to a championship-caliber roster. He delivered immediately: in his first season he posted a career-high 41 wins, helped Detroit win the President's Trophy, and backstopped the team to the 2002 Stanley Cup, becoming the first European-trained starting goaltender to win it, with a postseason shutout record along the way. He briefly retired, un-retired, and left for Ottawa before returning to Detroit in 2006 at age 41 for a second stint, again anchoring a Presidents' Trophy team and reaching the Western Conference finals. He capped his Detroit story in 2008, winning a second Stanley Cup as Chris Osgood's backup in what proved his final NHL season. Known for his unorthodox, sprawling "flopper" style, Hašek also led the Czech Republic to its only Olympic hockey gold, in 1998. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014.
