The Detroit story
Derian Hatcher grew up in Sterling Heights in Macomb County, the younger brother of NHL defenseman Kevin Hatcher, and came through metro Detroit's elite youth hockey, including the Detroit Compuware teams that played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Tournament in 1985 and 1986. A towering, physical defenseman, he became captain of the Dallas Stars and in 1999 lifted the Stanley Cup, the first American-born captain of a Cup-winning team. In July 2003 he signed a five-year contract with his hometown Red Wings, but a knee injury limited him to a handful of games at Joe Louis Arena. During the 2004–2005 lockout he stayed home and played for the Motor City Mechanics in suburban Fraser alongside Red Wings teammates Chris Chelios and Kris Draper. After the new salary cap forced Detroit to buy out his contract, he finished his career in Philadelphia. The Hatcher brothers were inducted together into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010.
