The Detroit story
Deja Trimble grew up on Detroit's east side and graduated in 2009 from Southeastern High School, where she played junior-varsity basketball. She began recording at home and posting songs online; her mixtape work caught the attention of fellow Detroit rapper Sayitainttone, who signed her to his IBGM label. In 2014 “Try Me”, a menacing lyric delivered in a gentle voice, spread from Detroit to national radio and landed her a deal with Columbia Records. The 2015 follow-up “Back Up”, featuring Detroit's Big Sean, went platinum, and both songs reached the top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100. She also joined Big Sean's hometown posse cut “Detroit vs. Everybody” alongside Eminem and Royce da 5'9″. Her debut studio album, Sell Sole II, arrived in 2020 to good reviews, and Detroit's Air Up There showcase counts her among the local talents who came up through its stage.
