The Detroit story
McCarty broke in with the Red Wings in 1993 as a tough winger who protected star teammates, and he became one of the most popular players at Joe Louis Arena. On March 26, 1997, in the brawl remembered as "Fight Night at the Joe", he pummeled Colorado's Claude Lemieux in revenge for Lemieux's hit on Kris Draper the previous spring, then scored the overtime winner in the same game. That June, in Game 4 of the Final against Philadelphia, he deked defenseman Janne Niinimaa and goalie Ron Hextall for the goal that clinched Detroit's first Stanley Cup in 42 years. From 1997 he played on the checking "Grind Line" with Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby, winning Cups again in 1998 and 2002. After leaving in 2005 and a difficult stretch, he fought his way back through the minor-league Grand Rapids Griffins and won a fourth Cup with Detroit in 2008. He later worked in Red Wings broadcasting and alumni events.
