The Detroit story
Hall grew up in the Sojourner Truth public housing project on Detroit's east side and ran track for Pershing High School, winning the state championship in the 400 meters. He went on to a college and professional track career, competing for the United States at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where he ran in the preliminary heats of the 4×400-meter relay for the American team that went on to win gold. After his athletic career, Hall returned to his hometown and joined the Detroit Police Department, trading one form of public service on Detroit's streets for another.
