The Detroit story
Curtis Armstrong was born in Detroit; after some years away, his family returned to Michigan, and he graduated from Berkley High School in the northern suburbs. He began at Western Michigan University but transferred to the Academy of Dramatic Art at Oakland University in Rochester, a conservatory program tied to the campus's professional Meadow Brook Theatre, and graduated in 1975. He then worked in regional theater before breaking into films as Tom Cruise's friend Miles in Risky Business (1983). A year later he created the role that followed him for decades, the belching, lovable Booger in Revenge of the Nerds. He went on to play Herbert Viola on Moonlighting, Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun in Ray, and the angel Metatron on Supernatural, and he became a busy voice actor. His 2017 memoir is titled Revenge of the Nerd.
