The Detroit story
Hellebuyck was born in Commerce Township and finished his high school career at Walled Lake Northern High School before junior hockey took him out of state. After one season with the Odessa Jackalopes and two at UMass Lowell, where he won the inaugural Mike Richter Award as the country's top college goaltender, the Winnipeg Jets, who had drafted him in the fifth round in 2012, brought him up through their minor-league system. He became one of the league's best netminders in Winnipeg, winning three Vezina Trophies and the 2025 Hart Memorial Trophy as NHL MVP. At the 2026 Winter Olympics he started in goal for a gold-medal-winning U.S. team, stopping 41 shots in the final and even picking up an assist on the winning goal, a performance that earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
