The Detroit story
Coleman Young II was born Joel Loving II in Royal Oak in 1982, the only son of Detroit Mayor Coleman Young and Annivory Calvert, a city assistant public works director; he later took his father's name. He was raised partly in Detroit, where his family attended church, and partly in California, finishing high school in San Bernardino and attending Azusa Pacific University. Back in Detroit, he won a 2006 race for the 4th district of the Michigan House of Representatives, covering the Lower East Side and parts of downtown and Midtown, and served from 2007 to 2010. He then represented the 1st district in the Michigan Senate from 2011 to 2018, taking in parts of Detroit and the Downriver suburbs, and sponsored legislation on workplace protections for pregnant police officers. He ran for mayor in the 2009 special election and in 2017, when he finished second to Mike Duggan, and lost the 2018 congressional primary to Rashida Tlaib. In 2021 he was elected to the Detroit City Council.
