The Detroit story
Christine Lahti was born in Birmingham, the affluent Oakland County suburb north of Detroit, to a Finnish-American surgeon, Paul Theodore Lahti, and Elizabeth Lahti, a painter, homemaker and nurse. She grew up there and graduated from Birmingham's Seaholm High School. After studying fine arts at Florida State University, she came back to Michigan and earned a drama degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She then went to New York, where she made her Broadway debut in 1980 and soon moved into films. Her performance in Swing Shift (1984) brought an Oscar nomination, and a decade later she won an Academy Award herself as director of the short film Lieberman in Love (1995). On television she won a Golden Globe and an Emmy as Dr. Kate Austin in Chicago Hope.
